O2 to Provide Fixed-line Services


Following its major mobile rivals Vodafone and Orange, UK’s largest mobile operator provider, O2, recently announced its arrival in the fixed-line segment of the telecom market. Vodafone and Orange are O2’s arch rivals and both already provide home phones.

The move to provide fixed-line phones will bring O2 up against BT, its former parent company. O2 had initially been spun out of BT in 2001 and was bought by its current owner, Telefonica, in 2005.

The advent of O2 into the fixed-line market is merely an attempt at offering a wider range of services to its existing customers and an avenue to add more customers to its kitty, and is not to be viewed as a move aimed at the market share alone.

Considering that O2 already offers mobile calls, mobile broadband and home broadband, the next service deemed logical to add more customers had to be fixed-line phones. The new service will be offered to existing mobile and broadband customers as part of a bundle in the first instance, and there will also be discounts for taking all three services (click to compare broadband prices).

O2 is planning to offer this service from the beginning of next month as it believes that the current customers in the fixed-line segment are no satisfied with their current service providers. It also claims that this move will bring in competitive pricing and benefit the customer.

Adults Not Getting Regular Internet Access

The National Institute of Adult Continuing Education held a survey recently, which has revealed that almost one- third of adults have no means to access the internet. The survey has also revealed that almost a third have no access to the internet on a day-to-day basis.

These fresh findings are very shocking, as in this generation of mobile broadband and 3G handsets, there should be ease of access to such technologies. This study has shattered the belief that a majority of the UK’s population have access to digital technology. The survey was conducted with nearly 5,000 adults and it was seen that the supposed digital inclusion is influenced very deeply by class and income of individuals.

In the AB socio-economic class consisting of managers and professionals, 86 per cent of people have regular computer access. In the DE group consisting of unskilled people and the unemployed, only 45 per cent have such regular access. This, the NIACE feels, is a very crude reality that the communications world is facing today.

A relationship between the learning poor, economically poor and the digitally poor has been seen by NIACE after its research over the past few years, said Rachel Thomson, a senior programme director at the institute. These findings cement the fact that there is still a lot that needs to be done to bring all users to the same level, more so because the Government has begun its plans to provide broadband to all by the year 2012.

According to Informa Telecoms and Media, a telecoms analyst, optimisation of networks is essential for enhancing the surfing experience of mobile broadband users. Recent estimates have revealed that the number of mobile broadband customers was 186 million in 2008 and is expected to go up to more than 600 million by the end of this year. A recent survey conducted by Virgin Media, covering over 3000 Internet users in Britain, has turned up more than its fair share of startling outcomes. Virgin Media boss Richard Branson has had to woefully conclude that the British population is far from being up to date with the technology that is now being so commonly used and is playing a key role in taking the country forward.

Faced with this worrying situation, Richard Branson, the head of Virgin Media, is talking of opening “broadband schools” in Britain, especially in Birmingham, Leeds and Belfast - areas that performed worst in the survey. Bournemouth Enjoys Free 100 Mb Broadband

Nearly fifty residences and businesses in Bournemouth now have access to free broadband from the i3 Group’s newly launched Fibrecity project. The network provides them with fibre optic broadband speeds of up to 100 Mb. However, the offer only holds while engineers are still in the area, and as soon as they move on to the next area, charges will be put in place. The same promotion strategy will be applied in Dundee as well, where work for the next Fibrecity network will start this summer.

The super fast fibre optic (FTTH) broadband was set up by creating a new underground network using the sewerage systems. Since the pipes were already in place, laying down of the network caused neither an extra cost nor any disturbance to the residents.

Bournemouth is the first of fifteen towns across the UK that the company, which was previously known as H20 Networks, has an eye on for the new network. The work on Dundee’s Fibrecity network project is expected to be complete by the end of 2010. Once the network is in full flow, the company plans to target 2000 homes on a weekly basis.

Taking a dig at BT’s recent fibre projects, the CEO and founder of the i3 Group, Elfed Thomas, said that Fibrecity is building national infrastructure to all homes, and it is the only network to be bringing fibre into the premises of both new buildings and existing properties. He added that Fibrecity, unlike BT, does not in any situation function with the aid of the archaic copper network, which gives a significant boost to the performance of their network.
