A Resolution You’ll Keep: Cycling with an Electric Bicycle

We’re often troubled by the need to do more exercise but so much can get in the way. We watch individuals packed into gyms working out, and think : I must travel to the gymnasium, pay my membership fee, then lift some weights. It just seems like loads of hassle, isn’t there something I can do that’s not going to waste a lot of my time - maybe something that’s actually pragmatic?

You might consider bicycling, as bicycling is a wonderful way to improve your health. You can cycle to work or do some shopping, so it’s rather pragmatic. It’s also cost-effective - there’s no gasoline involved and the running costs are almost nothing. It’s also very “green”. And not forgetting the minor point of actually getting fit too.

But many people are unwilling to get a push bike since it’s just TOO much exercise. As odd as it sounds, consider that they may be aged, live in a hilly area or suffer from particular ailments that make biking too “hardcore” for their abilities. And for a few people, it’s not practical bicycling to work since they will sweat too much because of the efforts of biking.

Now it’s time to introduce e-bikes, or electric bikes. E-bikes let your legs have a breather on the severe slopes merely by twisting your hand on the grip and allowing the electric motor take over - you don’t need to do any peddling then. Then when you’re ready to switch to manual, just let your legs take over. You get modest exercise and fresh air without doing yourself in. Electric bikes are also cost-effective to run necessitating only a daily recharge if you do around 30-40k a day, although most individuals require just a couple of recharges a week as they are not doing this kind of distance. You can find a local supplier of electric bicycles by browsing on the internet.

Nowadays the actual cost of purchasing an e-bike have come right down in price, so you can save yourself a considerable amount of dosh on bus fares, fuel, gym memberships etc. by buying and regularly using an e-bike.

Preparing to Ride Your Motorcycle

This article will discuss the preparation necessary for riding your motorcycle. We are mainly addressing what a rider must do to prepare him or herself before they go out on a ride. Area such as choosing the appropriate ride gear, as well as, basic routine motorcycle inspection will be addressed.

We all assume a level of acceptable risk when we ride a motorcycle. Part of this risk deals with what type of motorcycle riding gear we choose to wear. Some choose not to wear a helmet or protective clothing. This is the risk that rider has chosen to accept. The saying goes, dress for the wreck you are going to have. So if the rider choose to not wear a helmet and other protection. That is his choice and hopefully he has enough medical and life insurance to cover his accident. Again life is full of risk. It is up to each of us to choose how much of that risk we are willing to accept. We can minimize the risk of riding motorcycles by wearing protective gear and doing regular routine inspections on our motorcycles.

The purposes of motorcycle riding gear are for a rider’s comfort, protection, and visibility. Proper personal protective gear consists of the following:

Helmet,

Eye protection,

Full-fingered gloves,

Over-the-ankle footwear,

Long pants,

Long-sleeved jacket.

The principal function of the helmet is to protect the head and brain from injury. The four basic components that make up a helmet are:

Outer shell - keep sharp object from penetrating,

Impact-absorbing liner - cushion and absorb shock,

Comfort padding - comfort and fit,

Retention system - keep the helmet in place on the head.

There are several types of helmets. The full-coverage helmet differs from the three-quarter-coverage helmet in that the full-coverage helmet has a chin and lower face protection. Head injuries account for the majority of motorcycle deaths. A well-made helmet will have the DOT and Snell stickers.

For eye protection do not wear ordinary glasses or sunglasses. These are not shatterproof and do not keep out debris. Two types of motorcycle eye protection are the face shield and goggles. You can also get Doggles for your motorcycling dog. These are special goggles for dogs.

It is important to wear appropriate footwear. Proper footwear protects you from road debris, exhaust pipes. They also help with traction when your feet are on the ground. Boots also protect your feet and ankles.

When choosing riding gloves, follow these considerations: Fit, sturdy, outside seams, naturally curved, full-fingered.

The value of motorcycle-specific clothing is that it is made to fit a person in a motorcycle riding position, longer sleeves and arms, fuller shoulders, non-flap design, some built-in protection - leather or kevlar.

When choosing proper motorcycle clothing, consider the following: Fit, comfort, snug cuffs and arms, snap and button collar, durable material.

Considering the appropriate ride gear is important. It is always wise to dress in layers. This is so clothing can be removed and put back on as weather and temperature changes. You want to prevent hypothermia while riding in colder temperatures. Hypothermia is a subnormal body temperature and is indicated by shivering.

Motorcycle ride gear can also make you more visible in traffic. You can add a vest, add reflective material, and wear clothes that are reflective. White helmets are the most visible to other drivers. Bright clothing stands out. Dark clothing blends in and makes it harder for others to see you.

Now that you have prepared your ride gear for your upcoming ride, you now want to turn your attention to inspecting your motorcycle before you start out. The best place to find out about information in regards to proper routine motorcycle maintenance is by check with your M.O.M - Motorcycle Owners Manual.

Following your M.O.Ms routine maintenance ensures trouble-free riding and prevents expensive corrective maintenance.

There is an acronym I learned while taking my Motorcycle Safety Foundation riding course. The MSF calls it T-CLOCS. T-CLOCS is an inspection routine acronym. It stands for:

Tires and Wheels,

Controls,

Lights and electrics,

Oil and other fluids,

Chassis,

Side stand.

Hopefully after reading this article, you have gained some insight into how to properly prepare for you ride. One other are to prepare is your mind. Are you healthy, awake, not under medication, not under the influence? If you are clean and sober, awake, aware and feeling good. Then you will have an enjoyable ride. Ride straight and stay alive.

Utah Mountain Biking - Slick Rock, White Rim, And Bunker Biking!

Utah mountain biking offers some of the best rides anywhere. In fact, there are those who say that Utah is quickly becoming the mountain biking ‘capital of the world’, with a number of world famous trails. Perhaps it’s time to get out there and see for yourself…

Some of the more famous rides are of course Slick Rock Bike Trail, and White Rim Trail in Canyonlands National Park in the Moab area, but there are many other rides to explore.

The Moab area alone offers a staggering number and variety of Utah mountain biking trails, such as Poison Spider, Gemini Bridges, and Hurrah Pass. A host of other trails make this region an excellent destination for bikers of various abilities. The rides range from easier half day outings, to more demanding and technical rides, which may take a number of days.

Another Utah mountain biking region to explore is the Zion area.

Zion National Park features some of the world’s most stunning rock formations, and other natural wonders. Mountain biking here offers views of landmarks such as the Subway, the Narrows, and the Great White Throne.

Gooseberry Mesa above Zion National Park has been called the best new trail in America. This Utah mountain biking trail includes an easy out-and-back ride, or a more challenging technical single-track loop.

Just when you think you have exhausted the Utah mountain biking possibilities, you discover the Brian Head area. There’s the town of Brian Head - with a permanent population of just over 100 - sitting at nearly 1000 feet. You can’t miss Brian Head Peak which rises to a dizzying 11,307 feet.

The spectacular and rugged Utah mountain biking area surrounding Brian Head, includes the Cedar Breaks National Monument, Sidney Valley, Lowder Ponds, and Red Desert/Tippets Valley. Here the lush forests and alpine meadows is in sharp contrast to the Moab area’s red rock desert areas.

Brian Head offers beginner trails such as Twisted Forest, and the exhilarating downhill ride along Bunker Creek, always combined with extraordinary scenery.

Many other Utah mountain biking trails can be explored in areas like the Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument, San Rafael Swell, and Canyonlands, to name just a few.

For useful information, presented in an entertaining way, read “Mountain Biking Utah” by Gregg Bromka. In this revised edition of his book, you can devour 518 pages of action-packed information, detailing 100 Utah mountain biking rides, covering the entire state.

To quote from the back cover, ‘…through the Wasatch Mountains near Salt Lake City, you can enjoy endless vistas atop Brian Head Resort, and discover Moab’s redrock splendor in and around Arches and Canyonlands national parks’. Gregg Bromka describe Utah mountain biking as only he can, further whetting your appetite with a number of photos and maps.

Another great product to introduce you to the area, or to show back home to non-riding friends, is a 45-minute video, ‘Utah Mountain Biking’. Short clips of 30 of the regions most-loved trails have been filmed. Details are given about the location of the trail, and you will almost feel as if you are on the trail, as footage of riders are shown.

The region offers something for everyone. There is a vast amount of riding to be done. Be sure to set aside enough time for Utah mountain biking!
