If you’re a non-American business with a .com web address, and your regional Yahoo ranking is important to you, then my story might interest you.
Recently my copywriting website dropped out of Yahoo’s Australian rankings. For quite a while, it had been at number 1 for my primary keywords “advertising copywriter”, “copywriter”, and “website copywriter”. But then it suddenly disappeared. I clicked through about 10 pages of results, and it was nowhere to be seen. I then searched for my domain, and Yahoo couldn’t find it.
Something smelt fishy.
I’d done nothing ‘naughty’ to my site to warrant a ban, and I still had heaps of links to my site (actually, I had more than ever before).
I’m an Australian advertising copywriter. I’m based just north of Sydney and I host my website with a major Australian host. But my web address is a .com, not a .au. I started thinking this might be the problem.
So I emailed Yahoo support, explaining the problem, and sharing my thoughts on the cause.
And all of a sudden, nothing happened.
So I waited. And I waited. And I waited. And finally, after about a couple of weeks, I received an email from a Yahoo support representative informing me - incorrectly - that my keyword wasn’t featured in my page title or description. I should remedy this shortcoming and re-submit my site to Yahoo.
Frustrated, I replied. I repeated the important facts from the first email just to ensure they’d listened. They hadn’t. They hadn’t even searched for my domain to confirm that Yahoo no longer recognised it.
When they got back to me this time, they had started paying a bit more attention. The support rep confirmed my suspicion that Yahoo had excluded my site because of its .com URL. Her very helpful solution was that I should change my domain to .au! She included some ridiculously complex instructions for how to do so, and sent me on my merry way.
As you might expect, I wasn’t satisfied. Nor was I merry. I explained to her that this was not an acceptable solution because all the links to my site on the internet are pointing to the .com and my email address uses the .com.
She was unmoved. She asserted that this was the best and only way to solve the problem. Oh… and it might help if I added my primary keyword to my title and description.
My laughter was not good humoured! I wrote back expressing my displeasure at this “solution”. I painstakingly explained how Yahoo had made a mistake, and that if Google was capable of recognising my Australian business despite its .com addresses, I would think it’s technically possible. I also cited several other .coms in the first couple of pages of Australian results.
No response.
The situation didn’t look promising…
If this sounds like a familiar story to you, don’t despair. A week or two later, I searched Yahoo Australia for my primary keyword, and surprise, surprise… My site was ranked number 1 again!
The moral to the story? Don’t be intimidated by Yahoo. Trust your instincts and don’t give up. If you’re an Australian business with a .com, and you’re not listed in Australian searches, this might be why. In fact, I would think this story is relevant to all regional Yahoos. (Of course, before making any accusations, it’s a good idea to make sure your site is properly optimised and that you have plenty of inbound links.)
Anyway, that’s my story. I hope it helps someone.
And they all lived happily ever after. So far at least…
Yahoooooooo!
The End.

What Types of traffic are there?
So you have the best website money can buy you are immensely proud of your finished product but still no-one is buying. Why?
Your final profit is simple to calculate it is a factor of number of visitors * conversion rate * profit per visitor. The third factor, profit per visitor is usually where people focus their resources. It is a known quantity and easy to manipulate by simply charging the right price.
But the killer question is always how much traffic am I getting? And further are they the sort of visitors who will buy my wares?
With that simple statement in mind let’s have a look at the main sources of traffic on the internet today.
Search Engine Traffic
The best because it’s free. The worst because it is easily taken away. SE traffic is risky. It is easily acquired for relatively low competitive keywords with a simple knowledge of search engine optimization best practice.
Each search engine orders websites for any given term according to it’s own proprietary algorithm. This algorithm usually is based upon the various factors detailed in the SEO checklist, however the weighting applied will differ for each.
There are currently 3 major search engines being:- Google, Yahoo and MSN. Google is by far the most popularly used search tool.
For more competitive terms the SEO checklist is still applicable however will require additional effort in the key areas of the same key factors. You can investigate competition via these useful tools.
Directory Listings
These are not the massive source of traffic they once were. Submission to a directory is now more use to substantiate your link popularity, a key factor in search engine positioning. The most popular free and paid directories are included within our directory listings.
Paid Advertising
Once banner advertising reigned supreme, however today it is generally recognised that most website visitors suffer heavily from “banner blindness”. Visitors have seen so many banners over the years that they are now subconsciously tuned out when looking at the website.
Much more effective in today’s market place is the basic text link. Not surprisingly a link which is text only! These form the basis of advertising in many a Pay-Per-Click advertising campaign. Pay Per Click is the notion of paying only for visitors to a website that click on your link. Hence you will only pay for visitors to you website and not each time your banner or text link is displayed.
The two largest PPC engines are Google’s Adwords and Yahoo’s Overture services. PPC allows you to instantly drive traffic to your site without having to weight for your search engine optimization skills to be appreciated by the search engines.
Guaranteed traffic is a term used for relatively cheap traffic, usually purchased in bulk. The traffic is usually generated by a popup or popunder on another site, and in my experience has not proven very effective.
Traffic Exchanges
These tend to fall into 2 general styles. The first, ad exchanges are a reciprocal agreement, usually via a co-operative site to add a piece of code to your page(s) which displays adverts on your site. In return your site will be displayed on other members websites according to the individual co-operatives weighting factors.
The second, traffic exchanges, require you to browse websites presented on a central site. You are awarded points according to how many sites you have browsed and in turn these credits may be spent by promoting your site in the same way to other browsers.
Repeat Vistors
So often overlooked. You have done the hard work in getting a first time visitor to you site now get him to stay and later to return for more. There are various methods for making your site “sticky” these include:- including a newsletter and appropriate sign up form, supplying good content, either written by yourself or sourced from the abundance of free information on the net.
Such simple things as including contact details and appropriate use of autoresponders can make all the difference.
Viral Marketing
A rather flash title for a collection of techniques which are common sense but often forgotten. Such examples include:- writing your own articles, building communities via forums, offering free items/bonuses/competitions, producing your own e-book and issuing press releases.
If you are marketing your own product one of the most successful methods will undoubtedly be starting your own affiliate program and getting others to sell for you.
Competition
Not really a traffic category as such however careful analysis of your competition’s website, traffic, links and ad placement can all be obtained if you are diligent. This market intelligence will in turn lead to further opportunities to drive visitors to your site.
After a while it all becomes just good fun!

Getting visitors to visit your website is essential for making your website successful on the giant net. Visitors can’t find your site if they don’t know it exists, so making your site available for web surfers and searchers is the single most important thing for a successful website. The potential visitors can search for just your type of site on search engines like yahoo and the most used one today; google.
First of all let’s talk about how google really works. Google is the leading search engine on the internet, and for google to stay in the lead, it has to make sure that they provide search results that will satisfy the user
Here is a list of what google likes:
1.Let your URL contain some of your keywords.
2.Keywords in title tag, close to the beginning. 10 - 60 characters, no special characters
3.Keywords in keyword metatag - Shows theme, less than 10 words. Every word in this tag must appear somewhere in the body text.
4.Keywords in body text
5.Keyword density in body text - 5-20% keywords / total words maximum (threshold varies with topic)
6.Keyword in H tags, H1 is best H2 is second best, etc.
7.Keyword’s font size - should be bold, italic, etc.
8.Keywords early in page or tags are considered more important then others.
9.Keyword in alt text on the img tag, this text should describe the picture but try if possible to get some of the keywords in the description.
10.Links to your own internal pages should contain keywords. The filename linked to should also contain keywords.
11.Navigation efficient, Try to make it possible for the visitor to get to any of your pages within only two clicks, absolutely no more than 4 clicks.
12.Link to external pages should also contain keywords. Don’t link to “link farms”, google hates “link farms”.
13.Outgoing link anchor text should be on topic and descriptive.
14.Check each one of your links to external websites periodically, avoiding broken links
15.The domain names .edu and .org seems to have been given highest status by google.
16.Keep your page file sizes low as small files are preferred by search engines. Less then 40Kb. And the more of these files you have the more google will like your site.
17.Google likes fresh pages.
18.Frequent updates equals frequent spidering and crawling.
19.Keep the URL length minimized, use less than 100 characters, less even better.
20.Larger sites are presumed to be better funded, better organized, better constructed, and therefore better sites. Google likes LARGE sites, for various reasons, not all positive. File size < 40Kb but lots of them.
21.Site age - Old is best.
22.Users bookmarking your page is a good thing.
23.# of visitors = good.
24.Domain register time - register for 5 years and google knows you are serious, register for 1 year and it’s a throw away domain.

Internet Marketing requires you to sale other people’s products or services, or if you have decided to create your own product, sale your own. But whether you are selling your own or others, we all have one thing in common - getting traffic to our websites. But what is most important is not just getting traffic, but targeted traffic. Thus, How Do you or I get traffic to our sites?
In my early beginnings on the Internet, I tried many methods of getting traffic to my website. I was definitely a newbie in training - some of the software or services that I bought did me no good. I found, at times, that it was truly difficult to decipher which was a good deal and which was not - who was honest, and who was not - but I guess it goes with the Internet territory - and you must always do your due diligence.
However, I have found three methods of getting traffic to my site or affiliate product or service - Buying it - PPC, such as Google, Mamma, Overture, linking or the hard one Search Engine Optimization.
Pay-Per-Click
If you have the money to invest in Google or some of the other search engines pay-per-click programs you can make some money. Here you create an ad or ads relevant to your affiliate program, and place a bid on the keywords you select. This takes time, energy, persistence and money - and research. Also, I would advise that you read your affiliate programs rules, as well as, the rules of Google Adwords before jumping into the pay-per-click arena. You usually have to put “aff” after your ad or something similar to that - it’s dependent upon the affiliate program you are in. The idea with pay-per-click is that you pay only when the individual clicks on your ad.
Linking
Linking can be by either paid or unpaid methods. The paid methods are paying for your link to be shown in Ezines, newsletters or on other peoples’ sites. It can be costly, so the best suggestion that I can give you is to research the Ezines, newsletters and or other people sites that you want to link with before buying. In most cases, if ezines are accepting advertising, you know they must have at least 500+ subscribers, or I should say, be sure that they have at least 500+ subscribers before advertising in their ezine. Know what you are getting before you put your money down - and as they always say, be sure to read the fine print.
The unpaid method is through article creation. This requires hard work on your part, but the return will be seen in the long term. Keep in mind, your articles should be relevant and address the subject matter of your site and products. Content reigns king on the Internet - and if it is relevant to their needs - they will eventually come to read.
Search Engine Optimization
Search Engine Optimization is basically the optimization of your web pages so that you can get a decent ranking by the search engines, and thus, to pull people to your website by it relevance. This is a difficult chore and needs to continually be worked at - and within the ethics of the Search Engines.
To conclude, getting targeted people to your site is really part of growing your business. And Internet marketing - well, it’s not for the faint-hearted, but for the determined, persistent individual who wants to really make a living on-line. Thus, if you really want to make a living on-line - don’t give up and promote.

Dreaming of getting tons of targeted traffic to your site without spending a red cent? Fantasizing of effective free advertising?
Then you should deffinetely start writing articles for promotion!
The things you’ve gotta love about articles are:
A. They’re free to submit, allowing thousands of people to read them (and see your web link) without costing you a dime.
B. They prepare a visitor for purchasing your product or service much more effectively than a three line Pay Per Click ad possibly could.
C. They create a ton of inbound links to your website, which in turn boosts your Search Engine ranking (making it easier for people to find your site).
So, whether you have a product to sell, an affiliate product to promote, a newsletter, or just want more truly targeted traffic to your website, writing articles is THE way to go.
Here are the 4 steps to getting NON-STOP traffic using articles:
1. Write an informative, interesting article that your target audience would enjoy reading. Make sure that the subject covered in your article relates to the content on your site or you won’t convert very many sales or opt-ins.
For instance if your website caters to dog owners: DO write an article on the different breeds of dogs or anything else to do with dogs, but DON’T write an article about cats.
2. If you don’t believe you can write a very good article then pay someone else to write it for you. Elance.com is an excellent place to find potential article writers. Someone on Elance will write you a quality article for a low one time fee, and then you just slap your name on it and promote it as your own (this is perfectly legal).
3. The next step is writing the “ad” that is inserted at the end of your article in the byline, author’s bio, about the auther, resource box or whatever else it may be called. This little 3 to 5 line “ad” will entice your readers to visit your site.
EXAMPLE: Jane Doe is the author of “Hot Copywriting Tips,” a must have online newsletter for all website owners. Go to http://www.JanesSite.com to grab your FREE copy now.
4. Submit your article to every article site that has a category relevant to your article, and you’re ready to roll.
My favorite article sites are:
www.ideamarketers.com
www.goarticles.com
www.articlecity.com
www.articlesfactory.com
www.buzzle.com
www.ezinearticles.com
www.netterweb.com
www.isnare.com
Now get started promoting your articles. Get them out there fast if you want to set your traffic counter spinning.

For the past few years, I’ve been stashed away in my secret lab working on underground strategies for driving hordes of targeted to traffic to my sites.
I’ve decided to emerge from my lab for a limited time and reveal a few of these killer strategies to you.
Are you ready? Good… let’s get to it!
It seems that my consulting clients all suffer from the dreaded ‘limited site’ disease. You may be afflicted by it as well. Basically, the disease consists of limiting your vision to your main website.
Most people see their site as being the center of the universe… but in their universe no other stars or planets exist.
I would like to open your eyes to a bigger picture. One full of stars, each surrounded by their own planetary system.
How does this relate to your website?
Imagine your site sells 32 different widgets (this is the center of the universe).
Now imagine you create a new site for each widget which is dedicated to that widget alone. Some call these minisites, I will call them stars.
The object of each star is to expand upon the benefits of that widget, but point back to the center of the universe (your main site) to order that widget.
With me so far?
Good, let’s move forward.
Now, each star can have its own planetary system. Let’s say each star has 5 planets. Planets are simply ‘feeder’ sites whose only purpose is to direct traffic from the search engines back to the star.
For example, many of you are familiar with page generating applications such as Ranking Power or Traffic Equalizer. What if you used these with the intention of feeding your stars? Are you beginning to feel the power here?
I will stop here for now.
To recap…
Your main site is the center of the universe. You register a domain for each of the products you sell and create a star (or minisite) for that product. The ordering page for that star points back to your main product site. Each star then has 5 planets (feeder sites) generated with Ranking Power or Traffic Equalizer all pointing back to that star.
It’s a very powerful concept, use wisely. More will be revealed soon.

Is your site making money? Is it making as much as you want? Your site may need to be modified to increase its earnings and your profits. Competition on the internet is ruthless. If you want to play the game, you need to know some of the tricks of the trade. Some great things to get you started are links and directory listings. There are also a few other tips that will help increase traffic and give your site a good reputation.
Directories are an excellent way to increase visibility of your site on the web. There are numerous directories on the web that have topics related to all kinds of businesses. If you have other quality sites like directories pointing toward your site, this will increase your number of inbound links, and thus give you some extra visibility points. Some directories require reciprocal links back to the directory, but these can actually hurt your visibility. It is good to have relevant links on your site however. Link to other sites that are industry specific and update the links often in order to keep your site current.
Linking is an extremely important way to increase website visibility. The greater number of quality links you have coming to your site, the better your visibility. Developing an advertising agreement with other website owners, you can increase each others visibility by sending visitors to each others sites.
When linking to other sites, it is important to consider their ranking. Make sure the site has a good ranking by using Google PageRank. Having a site link to you that doesn’t have a PageRank could hurt your visibility. A site without a PageRank may be being penalized by search engines, and you don’t want to be guilty by association.
The important thing to remember about links is quality, not quantity. Never link to sites that are not relevant to your site. Search engines do not like this. Seek out the sites that most relate to your site, in some cases you might even link to your competitors. Never buy links or participate in link farms. Search engines have developed methods to filter out these unethical link farms and may also penalize sites that participate in link farms. Also remember that text links are best. Do not link with images because search engines cannot read them and won’t pick up your keywords.
These tips are just a few of the methods available to increase web site visibility. Search engines continuously update their ranking criteria, so putting a few links on the site is not all it takes. A search engine positioning specialist is very helpful in making the proper additions to a web site and keeping up with current search engine criteria.

If your new to the internet marketing world, you might not understand how vitally important choosing the right keywords for your website is. Most people who put up a website (designers included) don’t realize that the right keywords on your website will improve your search engine rankability.
When a person goes to a search engine like Google or others, they type in a word or phrase that they want information on. This is what we call a keyword. For instance if the person was looking to buy a new golf club, he might type in ‘golf clubs’ or ‘golf shop’ or another variation. So if you were a golf store you would want to have those and other related keywords within your site.
So what if you understand the importance of keywords but don’t do any keyword research? Instead you simply think about your product or service and come up with keywords that you think people will search for? At first this might sound like a good idea but in reality you risk losing many potential customers.
What do you think happens if you pick a bunch of words or phrases that people aren’t actually searching for? Or you don’t think of all the hundreds of other keywords that relate to your product or service and therefore lose potential clients?
You might have the best of intentions when thinking of your own keywords, but it’s better to do a thorough keyword search before beginning any website project.
There are a few different places that you can perform these keyword searches.
1. Wordtracker is a great online tool found at www.wordtracker.com You can sign up for a free trial to test it out. This is the most thorough keyword research tool that I have found. You can easily find several thousand related keywords in one search. I created a free ebook that you can download that will help walk you through all the steps of doing an in depth keyword research with Wordtracker. You can download it at http://www.westmarketing-design.com/wordtracker.pdf
2. Overture is actually a paid per click advertising center, but they do offer a keyword search tool if you can find it.
They like to move it around a lot so it doesn’t get too abused. As of this article you can find it by going to www.overture.com then clicking on ‘advertiser center’ in the top right corner. Then under the tools table on the right click on ‘keyword selector tool’.
This tool is similar to the one at wordtracker but does not give you as in depth a search nor as many options. It is still good though to use different resources so that your making sure to get all the related keywords you possibly can.
3. Teoma is an often overlooked place to also gather keywords. It is actually a search engine of its own, but has a cool little feature that can help you choose more keywords.
When you type in a word or phrase to search it also gives you two sections on the right hand side that can help you out.
The first is ‘refine’ which shows related keywords to your search that you might also want to search on. These are extra keywords. You can keep clicking on the keywords in this section with each new page offering more related searches.
The second section is called ‘resources’ which provides websites that have gatheres links on your specific search topic. This is great to see what kind of competition you got going and check out what works and what doesn’t.
So there you go, three ways to conduct a really thorough keyword research.
