Ofcom Will Release 800 MHz Range for Mobile Broadband

News of spectrum release were already rife in the media, and now Ofcom has finally confirmed through an official declaration that mobile broadband providers are going to receive the 800 MHz band of broadcast spectrum.

The government’s move towards spectrum allocation echoes its previous decision to open up smaller spectrums in 2003. But now the 800 MHz range decision has come in context of mobile broadband fast becoming the next generation necessity. Consumers want an enhanced digital experience through high-speed connectivity. With this decision, Britain adds its name to the list of nations that have already ushered in a digital revolution in Europe by switching to 800 MHz spectrum.

This new spectrum allocation will foster healthy competition among service providers. Mobile broadband companies will spend billions on diversification, and the consumers will enjoy benefits like reduced prices of broadband devices, and advantages in the form of competitive and innovative services. The ‘digital dividend’ reaped by freeing up of airwaves by swapping to digital TV has influenced the release of a broader spectrum. Ofcom says that the allocation will provide consumers with an enhanced mobile broadband service, as is the case in other European nations. Once the spectrum has been cleared by the government, service providers are expected to make a beeline to get hold of it.
